Rustington 2 - 2 Mile Oak
Sussex County Football League Division 2
CAPTAINN MARVEL SAVES THE DAY |
The Blues were saved in the dying moments by captain marvel Russell Tomlinsons header to salvage a draw in an average game in this Division 2 clash. Mile Oak, from the first game again belied their current status in the division by pushing Rustington all the way through the tie, and almost snatching all three points before Tomlinsons intervention.
With both teams looking into settle in the first 10 minutes, MIle Oak had the best of the attacking play, until Richie Hellen finds some joy down the right, Boxall has the first chance at goal, a cross from the left decives the defender and the header glances over. The game goes along at a canter, with people on the sidelines clearly suffering the night before. The kids in the park and the first team journalists karaoke performances almost overshadowed the events on the pitch...another hoof from the midfield confirms the quizzical reason as to why a game is scheduled for New Years Day.
The deadlock is broken after 26 minutes, a foul committed by Adam Bibb, allows Carden to step and dispatch the penalty into the low right hand corner, 0-1. However, Rustington fight back straight away - a deleivery from the right finds Sean Duffy in the middle, his shot is blocked but only parried to Andy Boxall, who smashes in the rebound to equalise.
Both teams again slowed to a snails pace with some woeful play, only Terry Withers seemed to want to play in the middle of the park and made some excellent passes and runs to get Rustington motoring again. Unfortunately the pattern continued into the second half, Adam Bibb on the edge of the box shoots, which creats a ricochet in the box, with players incuding Boxall almost following up with the rebound.
Rustington begin to build up the intensity just after the hour with Steve Kirkham establishing himself in the game, Boxall maybe too much with an inocuous challege on the Mile Oak Captain. Withers provides an excellent cross to Chris Green on the edge of the box of which could have been hit better. Although Rustingtons pressure began to increase, it was Mile Oak that got the lead against the run of play, the subsitute is able to run on to a pass from the midfield, and despite shouts for offside the goal is given. However Rustington are not done, two minutes later Withers floats in a trademark cross for Tomlinson to level the game in the dying seconds.
